Before starting a juice-only diet
Before replacing meals with juice, discuss the plan with a doctor or dietitian. Explain what you want to achieve and bring the menu you are considering. They can assess the risks and help you find a practical way to meet your needs.

Do you need to reduce meals beforehand?
Reducing your food before a juice-only diet can leave you short of energy and nutrients. It does not protect you from the risks of a prolonged restrictive diet. Keep eating enough while you seek advice about the plan.
Keep regular meals while reviewing your plans. If you want to eat more vegetables or reduce sugary drinks, make those changes without a fasting lead-in.
Planning involves more than choosing a quiet week
Consider how the proposed diet would affect work, exercise and family responsibilities. Restricting food can cause weakness or dizziness even on a quiet day at home, so allow for these risks when discussing the plan with a clinician.
Take a sample of the proposed menu to a dietitian. Include the quantities of juice, supplements and other food, along with your medicines and health conditions. With those details they can assess the plan you would follow, whatever the programme is called.
When is professional advice especially important?
Do not start a self-directed juice-only diet for a child, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with a history of disordered eating. If you take medicines or live with conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease, you need advice before major diet changes.
Low weight, recent illness or already poor food intake are also reasons to have a clinician assess you. Do not stop medicines to qualify for a programme, and do not treat absence of a diagnosis as a guarantee of safety.
Choose a useful goal
A practical goal might be adding vegetables at lunch, preparing regular meals or reducing sweet drinks. Decide how you will do it and review how it fits daily life.
Seven or twenty-one days on juice is not a health outcome. If your goal involves weight, persistent symptoms or recovery from illness, ask a healthcare professional for an appropriate plan. If you are already restricting food and feeling unwell, seek advice now.
