Algal DHA or fish oil: how to compare labels
Fish oil and algal oil can both provide DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid. Their labels may report different amounts of DHA, EPA and total oil. Compare the same nutrient and serving size before deciding what the price means.
Where does DHA come from?
DHA stands for docosahexaenoic acid. On a fish-oil label, the starting material is oil taken from fish. Fish obtain DHA by eating microalgae, or by eating other organisms that consumed them. An algal DHA product begins with microalgae instead.
Once a label declares DHA, that name refers to the same fatty acid. The source still matters for dietary preferences and household buying. It does not settle the price comparison by itself.
Check these lines first:
- Source: fish oil, algal oil or a named microalga.
- DHA per serving: the declared milligrams for the stated serving.
- Serving size: one capsule, two capsules or another amount.
- Other ingredients: capsule shell, carrier oils and added ingredients.
Crypthecodinium cohnii is a DHA-producing microalga. It is the microalga named in the Indigold® blend used in Vplus® Formula.
Which amounts should you compare?
EPA means eicosapentaenoic acid, while DHA means docosahexaenoic acid. Many fish-oil labels list both. An algal product may declare DHA alone, or EPA and DHA, depending on its ingredients.
The large number on the front may describe the total oil, not the amount of EPA or DHA. Turn the pack around and read the nutrition or supplement panel. Compare the same line across both products.
For a like-for-like check:
- find the milligrams of DHA per serving;
- note any separately declared EPA amount;
- check how many capsules make one serving;
- divide the pack price by its number of servings;
- compare price per declared DHA amount, if that is the line you are checking.
Thirty capsules can be fewer than thirty servings. Capsule size on its own does not tell you the DHA content. The declared figures give the clearer comparison.
What else matters for your household?
Some fish-oil packs mention “triglyceride form” or “ethyl ester”. These terms describe how the fatty acids are attached within the oil.
In triglyceride form, fatty acids are attached to a glycerol backbone. In ethyl ester form, they are attached to an ethanol-derived group created during processing. A label may state the form, but the term alone does not establish the quality or value of the finished product.
For a vegetarian household, check the complete ingredient list. Fish oil is animal-derived. An algal source can fit a plant-based preference, but the capsule shell and every other ingredient still need checking.
For halal buying, look for certification on the finished product. A source description alone does not confirm the status of the capsule shell, processing materials or complete formula. If the mark is unclear, ask the seller for the current certification details.
Can Vplus be compared with a DHA capsule?
If one pack costs less, compare the serving rather than the box. Match DHA milligrams with DHA milligrams, then account for the servings required. After that, consider the source, capsule material and any certification that matters at home.
