Practical help for picky eaters

Make mealtimes manageable and know when to ask for support.

Feeding a child who accepts only a few familiar foods can become stressful. Start with predictable meals and patient opportunities to explore food. If their range is very limited or you are worried about growth, get advice rather than relying on a supplement to fill the gaps.

When is picky eating a concern?

Food preferences can change during childhood. Look at the overall pattern: what your child eats over several days, whether the range is narrowing, and whether eating causes distress.

Ask a paediatrician or dietitian about weight loss, poor growth, persistent pain, difficulty chewing or swallowing, or a very restricted diet. Do not dismiss these concerns as a phase. A child’s appearance or energy level alone cannot rule out a nutritional problem.

Things to try at the table

  • Offer regular meals and planned snacks, with a familiar food alongside something less familiar.
  • Keep portions of new foods small. Allow the child to look, touch and taste without forcing a bite.
  • Eat together when practical and let your child see you enjoying a range of foods.
  • Offer a refused food again on another occasion. Acceptance can take repeated opportunities; there is no fixed number that guarantees success.
  • Avoid bargaining over each mouthful. Seek feeding support if mealtimes are becoming a daily struggle.

Small choices can help a child participate: washing vegetables, choosing between two fruits, or serving a small portion. Keep expectations appropriate to their age.

Would Vplus help with picky eating?

Vplus is an algae-based supplement. It does not teach a child to accept new foods, replace a serving of vegetables or provide a complete diet.

Do not hide tablets in food as a solution to a restricted diet. Ask a paediatrician or dietitian whether your child needs any supplement, then check the suitability, amount and preparation of the specific product. Our team can provide Vplus label details for that discussion.
