Managing illness during the school term

Handwashing, separate bottles and a clear plan when a child is unwell.

If illness disrupts the school week, focus on practical care and preventing spread. Keep handwashing supplies easy to reach, give each person their own bottle, and follow the school’s current advice about attendance. A supplement does not replace these steps.

01

Make hygiene easy to follow

Wash hands with soap and water for at least twenty seconds, including before eating or preparing food, after using the toilet and after coughing or blowing the nose. Help younger children reach the tap and dry their hands.

Keep drinking bottles and utensils separate. Wash bottles, caps and spouts often, and allow them to dry. Put used tissues in a bin and clean the surfaces the household touches most.

02

Keep an unwell child home

Follow current HealthHub guidance, the school’s requirements and any instructions from your child’s doctor. Return-to-school advice depends on the illness; an old household rule may not apply.

Seek medical advice if symptoms worsen, persist or concern you. Trouble breathing, unusual drowsiness or other severe symptoms need urgent care. Keep the school informed through its normal channel.

03

Keep the handover between adults simple

Share the child’s care instructions, medicines already given and any appointment or school advice with the adult taking over. Keep a clear record to avoid duplicate medicine doses.

Familiar meals, rest and drinks can make the day easier. If your child has a fluid or dietary restriction, follow their care plan. Put supplements away rather than leaving tablets beside unattended breakfast glasses.

What about Vplus during an illness?

Vplus is not a treatment or proven protection for colds or flu. Do not start an unwell child on it or give extra tablets as a response to school-term illness.

If a child already uses Vplus under professional advice, ask their doctor or pharmacist whether illness or new medication changes that advice. Adults should also check interactions when adding a medicine. Our team can provide the product label for that discussion.
