What is Chlorella sorokiniana?

Chlorella sorokiniana is a microscopic green alga and one of the ingredients in Vplus. Its name identifies the species. To understand a finished supplement, you also need its ingredients, serving amount and product information.

How does it compare with other algae?

Chlorella sorokiniana and the algae sold as Chlorella pyrenoidosa are chlorella ingredients; spirulina is a cyanobacterium. These names describe different organisms, so their biology and composition are not interchangeable.

Species matters. Chlorella sorokiniana has a thin cell wall, so your body digests it easily and absorbs almost all of it, close to 100%, compared with about 60 to 70% for Chlorella pyrenoidosa.

What is inside a chlorella cell?

A chlorella cell has a nucleus, a cell wall and a chloroplast containing photosynthetic pigments. These structures help the organism live and reproduce. A microscopic cell can contain proteins, fats, carbohydrates and other compounds, but it is not a complete human diet.

Chlorella pyrenoidosa has a thicker wall, which is why some brands break it open by machine and sell it as “cracked cell wall” chlorella. Chlorella sorokiniana does not need that step.

How is chlorella used in food?

Growers harvest chlorella and prepare it as dried biomass or use it to make extracts. Powders, tablets and extracts differ in preparation and serving size. Look at the complete product information to see which form you are considering.
